What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization for Local Businesses

By Kate Bakker · October 2026 · 6 min read

The short answer

AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the work of making your business easy for AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to understand, trust and recommend. For a local business, that means matching listings, clear service pages, detailed reviews and credible mentions from other sites.

What does answer engine optimization mean?

A search engine gives you a list of links and lets you choose. An answer engine gives you the answer. Ask ChatGPT who the best medspa in Newport Beach is, and it doesn't hand you ten blue links. It names two or three businesses and explains why.

Answer engine optimization is everything you do so that your business is one of the names in that answer, and so that what AI says about you is accurate.

Why does AEO matter for a local business?

Because the question your clients used to type into Google, "who should I trust for this?", is now being asked out loud to AI. And AI is selective. It names a few businesses, not a page of them.

If you're one of the names, you start the conversation already trusted. If you aren't, that client books somewhere else, and you never know they were looking.

How do answer engines decide who to recommend?

They recommend the businesses they can verify. Before AI names you, it checks what other sources say about you and whether those sources agree. In practice, it looks for:

A business with great work and messy information often loses to a competitor with average work and clean, consistent information. That's the gap AEO closes.

What does AEO work involve?

  1. Make your facts match everywhere. Fix every listing so AI never sees two versions of your business.
  2. Give each service its own page. Answer the question in the first few sentences, then explain.
  3. Add structured data. Code on your site that labels your business, services, providers and FAQs so machines can read them without guessing.
  4. Ask for better reviews. Make it easy for happy clients to describe what they came in for, in their own words.
  5. Earn mentions. Local features, partnerships and lists that confirm you are who you say you are.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO earns a ranking in a list. AEO earns a place in the answer. Good SEO still helps, because AI often reads the same pages search engines rank. But ranking well no longer guarantees you get named. We break down the difference in AEO vs GEO vs SEO.

How do you know if AEO is working?

Ask. Put the questions your clients ask into ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and count how often you're named. We use 10 questions across three engines, 30 answers in total, and call the result your AI Visibility Score. Here are the 10 questions and how to run them yourself.

Questions about AEO

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap almost completely. GEO, generative engine optimization, focuses on earning mentions and citations inside AI-generated answers. In practice, the work is the same, and we treat them as one discipline.

Can I do AEO myself?

Yes, the basics. Start by fixing your listings and checking what AI says about you today. The harder parts are structured data, earning outside mentions and keeping everything current month after month.

How long does AEO take?

It depends on where you start and how competitive your market is. Fixing listings and pages can change some answers within weeks; outside mentions take longer. Anyone who promises a fixed timeline is guessing.
